Marlin Studios launches new product line: Premium 3D Models
Company releases first title: Home & Office Furniture
Graphics studio and publisher Marlin Studios, an industry leader in computer graphics texture maps, has launched a companion line of high quality 3D model libraries on CD-Rom. Dubbed "Premium 3D Models," the line will include a variety of themed 3D model libraries for use by 3D artists. The initial product launch features the release of "Home & Office Furniture." Many more titles are scheduled for future release throughout the coming year.
The Premium 3D Models are highly detailed and priced well below single downloadable 3D models on the Internet, as well as 3D models on other CD-Rom collections. Whereas some other companies sell single 3D models ranging from $10 to well over $500, the Premium 3D Models are priced as low as 50 cents each.
The 3D models are presented in the three most popular file formats: 3DS, LWO(6) and OBJ. All 3D models are fully licensable and royalty free. A special edition of Right Hemisphere's "3D Exploration" is included with each library for viewing, transforming and manipulating the 3D models.
The significant lower pricing does not reflect the quality of the models, according to company president Tom Marlin. "These 3D models are of the same or better quality as many you'll find elsewhere," he said.
"Our intention is to somewhat mirror the pricing of the twelve libraries in our texture map product line, which has been very successful. "Today's 3D artists cover a broad spectrum: from the small contractor to those at the large film or game studios," he added. "But all share the requirement of trying to minimize expenditures for outside graphics assets, such as textures and 3D models. The old business model was to base pricing on slightly less than the amount of time an in-house artist would spend creating a 3D model. We're trying to break that mold with affordable, high quality products. This is especially important to the 3D industry in challenging economic times."
The first release, Home & Office Furniture, is a library of 381 furniture models and includes ample 3D models to furnish every room in a virtual home, plus an office environment. The library even includes the kitchen sink! There are a large number of chairs and tables, kitchen cabinetry and appliances, and other furniture typically found throughout various rooms. Fifty 3D office models provide typical system desks, chairs, file cabinets and other accessories. The models range in poly count (number of faces) from 330 to 22,000 polygons and in size from 7KB to 10.7MB. Most models average in the 2,400-polygon range with file sizes of 440KB.
